Paper Abstract:      The premise for this paper is that knowledge transfer is a human-to-human process. One of the essential facets of learning is the social interaction in which knowledge is an outcome of individuals sharing experiences. When learners interact with others and their environment, there is shift in knowledge due to the social interaction. Consequently, knowledge transformation is a social process which occurs during and when there is an interaction among learners. In a contact university, learners, because of their mobility, perform tasks in three varied locations or contexts: formal contexts, semiformal contexts, and informal contexts or non-academic settings. Learning tasks are presumed to be constant but a mobile learner carries the tasks in different environments (social spaces). As learners move across different contexts, they use awareness of context and social presence to transfer knowledge or share learning experiences. This paper argues that learning and knowledge transforming actions are influenced by awareness of the changes in the environment, as mobile learners traverse varied learning contexts. The paper concludes that learners’ actions, driven by awareness in a social space, facilitates knowledge transformation and on-demand sharing of knowledge.
